Researchers at the University of Michigan have come up with a combination of spices - curcumin (from turmeric) plus piperine (from black pepper) - that might help prevent breast cancer. They've tested their spicy recipe in the lab on breast cells and found that the combination decreased the number of cancer stem cells that fuel the growth of tumors. The spicy solution interrupted the self-renewal process characteristic of the cancer-initiating cells. However, the spices didn't harm normal breast cells. The amount of curcumin and piperine used was about 20 times as much as could be consumed through diet. In the spring, the research team plans to start recruiting volunteers for a study to find out how high a dose of curcumin and piperine humans can safely tolerate. So far, the spices haven't been tested in patients, and the investigators urged women not to try it on their own. The study was published online on November 7 in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

I am rather lost trying to find a place to ask Dr Weil a question. I saw someone discussing their cats, "rodent ulcer" delima, I had a cat with that and if they see this and want to know what I experienced they can contact me at kaziah@q.com. My question to Dr Weil is this,,,I realize you are not a vet, but I am not getting anywhere with the veternary sience about my Scottish Fold Cat,, Folds have a lot of genetic defect problems,,,(hope I said that right) anyway, my cat is really messed up, he is getting worse and I need help.
Concering cartilage growth, *OSTESCHONDRODYSPLASIA*. mY CAT HAS WHAT SEEMS TO BE BONY OVERGROWTH AFFECTING HIS FRONT ankles/feet and his hind end /hip area. I have tried to find a suppliment for him, all I can find are formulas for dogs. My Cat is getting worse, he is starting to walk cow hocked and he is obviously in pain. I keep his nail trimmed because if he catched them he has more pain trying to dislodge them. Radiotherapy and Palliative irradiation are the only treatments I have read about and that would have to be done at the University vet school, I can't afford that. Can you recommend any suppliments that might help him, any recommendations would be so appreciated.
Thank you

I just had a bone density test that came out as a (2.2) I was wondering what way and product I might be able to get the proper calcium into my bones, I have tried over the counter products and I don't know what is working and what is maybe canceling out the obsorbsion of the calcium.
thank you

As to bone density Dr. Weil says this:
I recommend that all women supplement with 500 to 700 mg of calcium citrate in two divided doses taken with meals, for a total daily calcium intake of 1,000-1,200 mg from all sources. For men, I now suggest aiming for 500 mg from all sources. (Because higher amounts have been linked to increased risks of prostate cancer, men generally should avoid supplemental calcium.) I also recommend that both men and women take 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 to facilitate calcium absorption and to promote bone mineralization as well as for protection from a number of serious diseases. You can also get calcium by eating leafy greens and soy foods, as well as milk and milk products. For the sake of your bones, be sure to exercise regularly: weight-bearing aerobic activities (walking or running) and weight-lifting are proven protective measures.

As a precautionary measures enhance the intake of anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants fight free radical, which tend to damage the cells and thereby protect against cancer. Foods that are rich in anti oxidants include strawberries, tomatoes, garlic, broccoli and turmeric. Also stay hydrated. Stay well hydrated and drink plenty of fluids. This allows our bodily systems to flush out toxins and cell debris.
