Well said Dr. Weil. I personally believe that the pharmaceutical industry would be hurting if it weren't for antidepressants and statins. The epidemic of depression is especially troubling when there are so many other natural methods of treating it that are far more effective, and have been proven through scientific research to be more effective than the "conventional" methods, i.e. Prozac.
Interesting topic. I have a friend who lost her husband unexpectedly and she was put on antidepressants within hours. Aren't we supposed to feel sad when we lose a loved one? Isn't grieving part of healing?
As to why more people are depressed, maybe it's because our culture has become increasingly stressful--from the adulterated food supply and its stress on our bodies, to our inability to relax and be content with what we have, even if it isn't much!
I also think faith in God is a great antidepressant!
