Hypnosis Can Work for Kids’ IBS

This news comes from the Netherlands where researchers found that more than two-thirds of a group of kids who had six sessions of hypnosis and performed self-hypnosis at home were free or mostly free of stomach pain five years later. These results were much better than those from a comparison group of kids who received standard treatment - only 20 percent of them were okay five years later. The researchers noted that up to 20 percent of all children suffer from functional abdominal pain, a persistent pain that can’t be explained by a disease. IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) symptoms include abdominal pain and bouts of diarrhea or constipation or both. Prior to this study, hypnosis had been reported to help some kids address functional abdominal pain or IBS for only six months to a year. A total of 52 children and teens participated in the new study; they were randomly assigned to have hypnotherapy or standard care alone. The results were published online on February 7, 2012 by the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
