As an integrative wellness coach/RN, I find it not only impossible, but uncomfortably dishonest to tell anyone to do something that I myself am unwilling to do. Being an example of practicing a healthy lifestyle is the most profound, and true, teaching. I highly recommend the books by the late Lee Lipsenthal, MD, "Finding Balance in a Medical Life" and "Enjoy Every Sandwich." I have given them as gifts to friends and family members who are physicians.
My husband's uncle was a small town family doc who was beloved by his patients, but smoked like a chimney. He once told one of his patients that he should stop smoking. The patient protested: "But Doc--YOU smoke!"; to which Doc replied, "I'm you doctor, not your role model." Funny, but sadly wrong...
Thanks for this post, Dr. Weil.
Thanks for sharing this post, Dr Weil. I was really excited to learn about your healthy life. I have been practising it for 3 years where one year I am vegan. I am just wondering being vegan is good for health? I really feel good and happy.
